Nasal Surgery
Open versus closed techniques
The surgery, during which the patient
gets either local or general anesthesia, involves carving
or shaving the bone and cartilage in order to changing the
shape of the nose. By adjusting the shape of the underlying
bone and removing excess cartilage, the surgeon can make the
nose look more narrowing or less crooked, remove a hump or
downturn a pug nose.
The incisions are usually hidden just
inside the rim of the nostrils. Sometimes, it's necessary
to make an incision between the nostrils.
Surgeons today differ on whether the
open or closed technique is better in aesthetic surgery of
the nose. Dr. Korpeck often prefers the open technique. With
the open technique, surgeons make a tiny incision outside
the nose, and the rest of the incision is inside the nose.
This allows surgeons to fully expose the nasal structures
and achieve good visibility to work on the nasal tip. The
closed technique is performed entirely from inside the nose,
so all the reshaping of the nasal tip is done through the
nostrils.
The open technique offers versatility
and precision. Not all surgeons use the open technique, which
allows for a better view of the underlying nasal tissue. The
open technique is a versatile procedure that allows the surgeon
to fine-tune the results and be more precise performing the
rhinoplasty. With the open procedure, the surgeon can more
accurately place cartilage to give the nose the best possible
shape; in fact, any shape one wants. The open technique is
especially good for reshaping noses that have already been
operated on. And the open procedure is good when patients
suffer from complications of a deviated septum, which can
be fixed in conjunction with the cosmetic procedure.
