Brow Lifts
Those forehead furrows make
you look so angry
We might not be angry, but the
frown lines above our noses, in the middle of our foreheads
make us look like we are. They're deep lines--forehead furrows,
as many call them. Under stress and as we age, we tend to
make faces that encourage the creases, giving us the serious,
unhappy look.
One surgical procedure that eliminates
these lines is the brow lift. It is one of the only procedures
that allows surgeons to access the hard to reach muscles that
cause furrow lines. Today an alternative procedure, one that
is less invasive, might be better suited to younger patients
who generally don't need an extensive brow lift procedure.
It's called the endoscopic brow lift involves using a special
surgical tool, called the endoscope.
Plastic surgeons have been performing
this procedure for nearly two years and find that it is ideal
for many patients who want their brows permanently lifted
and to rid themselves of their forehead furrows. The technique
is done with an endoscope, a tubular probe fitted with a tiny
camera and inserted through tiny slips in the skin. Endoscopic
equipment is beginning to aid plastic surgeons in many areas,
including breast reconstruction,
forehead lifts, face lifts,
and abdominoplasty.
Through the endoscope, plastic surgeons
can find the offending muscles and cut them as they would
during the traditional brow lift. The procedure requires several
small stab incisions behind the frontal hairline, and avoids
the traditional longer, more invasive incisions from ear to
ear. Once the muscles are cut, frowning dramatically decreases
and the skin above the nose relaxes, which lessens the forehead
furrow.
What does this mean to patients? Shorter
incisions mean less risk of nerve damage and hair loss, as
well as minimal bleeding, swelling, and shorter recoveries.
The procedure takes about one hour--half the time of most
brow lifts--and it can be done safely on an outpatient basis.
The endoscopic brow lift can be done
alone or in conjunction with the
face lift, laser skin resurfacing
or peels to address the overall contour and skin tone of the
face and neck.
