To reduce oversized, uncomfortable breasts in women, surgeons offer breast reduction. The surgery not only reduces the breast size, but also often helps diminish back and neck pain, breathing difficulties, and shoulder-strap furrows caused by the heavy breasts.

How It's Done

Doctors surgically remove excess breast tissue as patients are under anesthesia. Most patients go home, but have the option of staying overnight in Dr. Korpeck's in-office recovery suite. While women can usually get back to work in about 10 days, there is usually minimal pain and swelling. Some risks include scarring and possible loss of the ability to breast-feed. This procedure is sometimes covered by insurance.

Special note: Surgeons today can also reduce oversized male breasts (gynecomastia) by using liposuction or cutting out excess glandular tissue.

Most experts agree that breast reconstruction does not interfere with cancer treatment or with one's ability to detect cancer recurrence.
