Saline Breast Implants
Saline implants are FDA approved devices that feature a silicone elastomer (rubber) shell filled with liquid saline-filler, a sterile saltwater solution that is similar to the body's natural fluids. Manufacturers of saline-filled implants have begun to distribute a new anatomically shaped implant, which aesthetically enhances results of breast reconstruction and augmentation surgeries.
The saline implants have been the only widely available option for patients since 1992, the year the FDA limited access of silicone gel implants to some mastectomy patients. Saline solutions are very common and are used to clean wounds and the surface of the eye. The watery saline solution used in implants is isotonic, meaning it has the same salt concentration as normal blood and body cells.
One advantage of the saline-filled implant is that it is filled with the sterile solution at the time of surgery, which allows the surgeon to adjust the size according to the patient's desires. It is also important to note that saline implants present no health risk to the patient even when ruptured; any migration or leakage of the saltwater solution from inside the implants is harmless and quickly absorbed.
Saline-filled breast implants are indicated for females for the following uses:
Breast augmentation - for women at least 18 years old - Breast augmentation is done to increase the size and proportion of a woman's breast.
Breast reconstruction - Breast reconstruction is done to restore a woman's breast shape after a mastectomy or injury that resulted in either partial or total loss of the breast(s) or to correct a birth defect.
For many women, breast implant surgery can be very rewarding, both physically and emotionally. However, as with any elective surgery, it is important to consider the possible risks, as well as the possible benefits, before making your decision. There are many important factors to consider before choosing saline-filled breast implants. Communicating to your surgeon your goals for breast implant surgery is one of the most important steps in achieving the individualized aesthetic result that is right for you, so you look and feel your best.
